Mrs. Helen L. (Fisher) Smith, 85, of 13354 Old Mill Road, Waynesboro, Pa died at 2:44 P.M. Tuesday, June 22, 2010 in her home following a long illness.

She was born on April 8, 1925 in the Roadside area of Washington Township, Franklin County, PA; she was the daughter of the late Paul A. and Naomi (Zeigler) Fisher. She was a life long resident of the Waynesboro area.

Mrs. Smith graduated from Washington Township High School with the class of 1943. She then received her nursing degree in 1946 from the Union Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore, MD.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the United States Cadet Nurses Corps from 1943 through 1946, during World War II.

She was employed as a registered nurse for the State of Maryland Chronic Disease and Rehabilitation Program at Fort Ritchie from 1946 through 1953.

She and her husband of over 56 years, Mr. Sanford D. Smith, were married on January 24, 1954 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waynesboro by Rev. Dr. B. Clinton Ritz.

Following her marriage, she helped her husband in the family business, Smith's Drug Store, as a clerk and bookkeeper, until selling the business in 1992.

Mrs. Smith was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waynesboro, where she was a member of the sewing Belles. She also was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Joe Stickell American Legion Post #15 and B.P.O. Elks Lodge #731 both in Waynesboro, member of Waynesboro Hospital Auxiliary, Friends of Renfrew, and Waynesboro Historical Society. She was a former member of the Waynesboro Country Club and Antietam Garden Club.

She enjoyed attending antique auctions, traveling, genealogy, crafts, such as sewing, knitting, crocheting, macramé, collecting dolls, wood-carvings and recipes.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by a son, Sanford A. Smith of Carlisle, PA one daughter, Barbara A. Smith of Sterling, VA, three grandchildren and one nephew.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Fisher Morrow and Frances Wink.

Services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Saturday, June 26, 2010 in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad Street, Waynesboro with Rev. Dennis Beaver officiating. Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday in the funeral home.
