Martha A. Fisher

Born December 4, 1917 in Brookville, Indiana, she was the daughter of the late Jacob Frederick and Lillian (Buckleman) Flegler.
She and her husband, the late, John Hugh Fisher, were married in Altoona, PA in 1944, living in Hamilton, Ontario for about a year, before moving to Waynesboro in 1947.
After graduating from Altoona High School, Altoona, PA, Mrs. Fisher began studies at Wilson College, majoring in Latin and minoring in Greek and English. She began teaching in Mifflin County and in 1956 was hired by the Waynesboro School District and taught English and Latin at Washington Township and Eat Junior High Schools. She then went to the Penn State Mont Alto campus in 1968, being hired as a professor of English, from which she retired in 1988 at the age of 70. She continued to be involved with the campus teaching part time and without compensation, and also worked with the Adventures in Learning program. Teaching as well as learning was a passion for Mrs. Fisher. She practiced both with incredible enthusiasm throughout her life. In 1990 Mrs. Fisher was the first recipient of the Teaching Excellence Award that now bears her name. The Martha A. Fisher Award for Excellence in Teaching continues to be awarded annually at Penn State Mont Alto.
Martha was an active member of the Waynesboro Little Theater as an actress and director in the 1950s. She was a member of Evangelical Lutheran Church in Waynesboro.
She is survived by: two sons, John D. Fisher, husband of Joanne, Gettysburg, PA and Stephen D. Fisher, Pittsburgh, PA; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and one sister, Elizabeth Webster, Media, PA.
In addition to her parents and husband, who passed away in 1980, she was preceded in death by two brothers, David and John Flegler.
Services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday, January 17, 2013 at Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, Waynesboro. Burial will be private.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, January 16th in the funeral home.
